SCHAUMBURG ILLINOIS

Local Information

Alexian Field

Bordered by three major Chicago area expressways and located only nine miles from O'Hare International Airport, Schaumburg's strategic location has played an important role in its emergence as a major center for commerce.

O'Hare International Airport, one of the world's busiest air terminals, is just minutes from Schaumburg's border, and serves travelers and airfreight shippers alike. Midway Airport, Chicago's second largest air facility, is located on Chicago's southwest side about an hour's drive.

Schaumburg is also served by the Schaumburg Regional Airport, which handles more than 80,000 touchdowns a year. Full aircraft services (including maintenance, fueling and charter service) are available. The village also maintains a 25-foot by 25-foot helipad in the heart of the office and retail district.

The Metra commuter rail line links to downtown Chicago from a station in Schaumburg and three nearby locations. Pace bus service (the suburban division of the Regional Transportation Authority) is friendly, fast and convenient.

The Woodfield Trolley is a convenient way to traverse the many shopping centers. The free shuttle service loops through the main shopping area, easing traffic in the area. A lunchtime shuttle is also available from office buildings along the Martingale Road, Woodfield Road and Golf Road corridors to the shopping center.

In addition to the extensive bus service, the village Dial-A-Ride Transportation (DART) service is the largest operation of its kind in the suburbs. Jointly sponsored by the village and Pace, DART offers inexpensive curb-to-curb service to any point in Schaumburg.

The village offers discount taxicab service for seniors, and Schaumburg Township operates a mini-bus service for seniors and disabled persons to help with trips to hospitals, medical offices, shopping centers, commuter rail stations, local churches and other destinations.

BARTLETT

Schaumburg Area Real Estate

Bartlett is easy to love. With a current population of over 35,000, it retains a warm, small-town atmosphere. Well-maintained homes line village streets, and shopping can be done at locally owned and operated stores and businesses, where the style is friendly and relaxed. Bartlett is a youthful community, with a median age of 31.6 years. Residents enjoy a broad range of recreational programs with limitless activities to pursue, from sporting events to cultural outings. Concerts, festivals and parades are scheduled year-round, all designed for family appeal.

The village offices are located in the Municipal Center. Careful planning by Village officials throughout more than 100 years of growth has assured essential services for all residents and made our town a great place to live and raise a family. A village with charm and a bright future, Bartlett surely lives up to its motto: "Progress with Pride!"

The wooded Bartlett landscape is filled with a rich diversity of housing types. In the historic center of the community, homes range from elegant Victorians to cozy bungalows. Around this central area, is a ring of attractive ranches and split-levels, and near the outer boundaries of the community, current developments boast custom-built homes. Multi-story apartment buildings are conveniently located near shopping and major traffic arteries.

The settings for Bartlett homes are as varied as the houses themselves. Older homes line streets shaded by mature trees. New developments feature gently curving streets, which limit traffic and enhance security. Through all its stages of growth, Bartlett has retained its small-town warmth and character, assuring friendly neighbors and pleasant surroundings.

ELGIN

From Victorian mansions to city lofts to new construction, Elgin's diversity of housing offers something for everyone.

Within the Elgin Historic District east of downtown lies the original plat of land that James Gifford claimed as Elgin. Many of the old dwellings lining its streets sprung up in the boom of the dairy and watch industries during the late 1800s.

The Spring/Douglas Historic District, located north of the city, also benefited from this boom. An 1884 local newspaper referred to Douglas Avenue as "Elgin's Fashionable Avenue" because it was home to many of the city's leading citizens. Today, many of the "Painted Ladies" lining Douglas, Spring and other streets in this area are still at the height of Victorian fashion.

The Elgin National Watch Historic District, located south of the city's center, was home to cottages and other housing for watch factory workers. The Elgin National Watch Company Observatory (which set the time for clocks and watches by the stars during the days of the watch factory) is also in this district.

Elgin's growth during the 1960s led to another explosion of rooftops throughout the city - including apartment buildings, townhouses and duplexes to provide more families with quality, affordable homes and extended the city's borders to the countrysides east and west of the river.

In recent years, downtown historic buildings have undergone a renaissance of residential living, with upper floors being renovated into chic, city-style lofts. River Park Place, a new urban residential development along Kimball Street, is at the forefront of the city-living trend. All of these city dwellings are a just a short walk to Pace bus stops and the Metra station.

Elgin's new frontier lies in its Far West Plan near Randall Road. The city estimates that new construction will bring in approximately 15,000 new homes in the coming years, adding on average 800 to 1,000 each year. These new developments offer homes for every lifestyle, from competitively priced townhomes and condos to luxury executive homes with large lots and upscale amenities.

So, whether your taste is Queen Anne's lace or Warhol retro, there's no place like home in Elgin!

SOUTH ELGIN

South Elgin's residential community, where homes combine affordability with comfort, contrasts nicely with its vigorous business climate. A wide spectrum of housing types are available, offering something for everyone in South Elgin. Thoughtful planning has created residential unity by cleverly combining original properties with new developments. Families can choose older, well-maintained neighborhoods that still exhibit the charm of yesteryear. Or there are areas where entire new subdivisions boast the latest in comfortable living. Various architectural styles in many sizes are proudly displayed throughout quiet subdivisions, whose property taxes are among the most attractive anywhere.

Charming retreats that overlook the Fox River's meandering beauty offer panoramic vistas. Large, upscale dwellings and carefully restored mansions exhibiting traditional grace mingle amid the greenery of stately trees. New subdivisions offering a wide range of amenities have quickly grown on West Spring Street, along McLean Boulevard, and on the southwest side of town at the Thornwood development, South Elgin's newest gem.

Real Estate Tips
Titles >Ways to Hold Title

When two or more people purchase property together, there are three ways that the title can be held. Knowing the implications of each form of ownership will help you decide how to write your deed.

"Tenancy by the entireties" is reserved exclusively for married people. Both husband and wife own an undivided interest in the property. On the death of one party, the surviving spouse owns the entire property and no probate will be necessary. When unmarried persons buy a home together, they should seek legal advice regarding how title should be held. As "tenants in common" each party owns a percentage interest in the property. On the death of one party his or her interest does not go to the surviving owner but is distributed in accordance with the will of the deceased, whose estate must be probated. As "joint tenants" each party owns an undivided, equal interest that passes automatically to the surviving joint tenant. Probate is not necessary if the deed reads "joint tenants with rights of survivorship".

It is important to know that in most courts, if a deed is written without specification of how title is held, the property is titled as "tenants in common."
